Working With Mediators

A Collaborative Approach to Grow Your Practice

As a lawyer mediator, much of my work has traditionally involved working directly with couples in sole mediation. However, collaboration has always been an important part of my practice and long before hybrid mediation was formalised.

I have regularly included other professionals in the process — including accountants, pension experts, family therapists and child specialists — where their input has helped couples reach a more effective and informed resolution.

Shared Expertise

Co-Mediation for More Complex Matters

During my time in a larger firm, the structure did not easily allow for co-mediation with other mediators. Now, working independently, I am able to offer a more flexible and collaborative approach.

I see many mediators, particularly those with a therapeutic background, forgo dealing with more complex and intrinsically more profitable cases due to a lack of financial expertise. Rather than lose excellent work why not work with me? I welcome opportunities to co-mediate with other mediators, particularly where combining different skill sets can enhance the process for clients.

    My Expertise for High-Value Cases

I bring over 30 years’ experience as a divorce lawyer, much of it focused on complex financial cases involving substantial assets.

My role in a co-mediation setting is often to:

    • assist with financial analysis and structuring proposals
    • identify legal issues and appropriate solutions
    • support progress in cases where complexity may otherwise slow the process
  • B.

    Supporting More Complex Cases

Some mediators may feel that cases involving more substantial assets or complex financial arrangements fall outside their current experience or comfort zone.

Co-mediation offers a practical way to:

    • retain the client within mediation
    • provide them with the level of expertise the case requires
    • build confidence in handling more complex matters over time
  • C.

    A Specialist Combined Skill Set

Many mediators bring excellent communication and therapeutic skills, which are essential in managing the dynamics of mediation.

When combined with specialist financial and legal experience, this can create a highly effective process — particularly in more complex cases — and significantly improve the prospects of reaching a successful outcome.

    Developing Your Practice

For those looking to expand their practice into higher-value or more complex work, I am also able to offer support on a consultancy basis.

    This can include:

    • guidance on handling more complex cases
    • structuring mediation processes
    • developing confidence in financial matters
    • building a more sustainable and commercially viable practice
