About Me

Trusted Experience in Complex Financial Disputes

For more than 30 years I have worked with couples going through divorce, helping them resolve financial and family issues either through the court process or through mediation.

For many years I was a senior partner at Paris Smith LLP, one of the leading law firms on the south coast, where I headed departments and was involved in the management of a successful and growing practice.

Recognised Expertise

Extensive Experience in Complex Divorce and Financial Matters

My work has primarily been based in the south of England and London, although I have also been involved in a number of international cases. Much of my professional life has been spent dealing with complex financial matters arising from divorce, although I have also helped couples resolve issues relating to children where these form part of the wider dispute.

Over the years I have been involved in many high-profile cases, and for decades I have been ranked by leading legal directories as one of the country’s leading divorce lawyers. I have acted for a wide range of individuals including senior professionals, entrepreneurs, international business figures, sports personalities, members of the judiciary and others whose circumstances require both discretion and expertise.

There are very few types of financial dispute arising from divorce that I have not encountered during my career.

My Journey

Why I Chose to Focus on Mediation

  • A.

    A Move Towards Mediation

Having spent many years involved in contested court proceedings, I increasingly saw the damage that prolonged conflict and litigation can cause – both financially and personally.

This led me to focus more on mediation and other forms of constructive dispute resolution, where couples are able to reach sensible agreements in a more private and supportive arena – away from the hostile environment of the court.

Today I devote my time to working with couples who want to resolve matters constructively and avoid the uncertainty, delay and expense of court proceedings wherever possible.

  • B.

    Experience in Mediation

I was among the first UK divorce lawyers to qualify as a family mediator, having been trained by John Haynes, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of family mediation.

I was also one of the first mediators to achieve accreditation from the Family Mediation Council (FMC) in recognition of my expertise.

In addition, I qualified as a civil mediator, trained by the late and highly respected Henry Brown, allowing me to bring a broader mediation skill set to complex financial disputes including wider family disputes and commercial dealings.

  • C.

    Complex Financial Mediation

There has sometimes been a perception that mediation is only suitable for simpler cases. My experience has consistently shown that this is not the case.

I have successfully mediated disputes involving very substantial assets and complex financial structures, including cases where the total assets exceeded £30 million.

I have also successfully mediated disputes with trust assets running into the hundreds of millions of pounds.

In many of these situations mediation has allowed couples to reach agreement without the significant legal costs and delays that often accompany contested court proceedings.

Constructive Approach

Dedicated Attention for Every Case

Mediation works best where both people genuinely want to resolve matters in a fair and constructive way.

Please note I may not always be available within your timescale as I strictly limit the number of mediations I undertake at any one time. My philosophy is that all of my cases demand total attention which can only be achieved if case numbers are limited. I commit fully to my cases and expect my clients to do so as well.
